A serious multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 291 in South Windsor, Connecticut, caused major traffic disruptions Monday morning, August 31, 2026, after eight vehicles collided during the morning commute. The crash occurred on I-291 westbound near Exit 2 and prompted a large emergency response.
According to officials, the collision involved a school van, a tractor-trailer, two pickup trucks and four passenger vehicles. The crash was reported at approximately 7:45 a.m. between Exits 2 and 1D, with all westbound lanes initially closed as emergency crews responded.
Six people were injured in the crash, including two people who suffered serious injuries. Three other people reportedly declined medical treatment. Because multiple ambulances were needed at the scene, South Windsor firefighters declared a mass-casualty incident and requested assistance from surrounding communities.
The school van had one student and a driver aboard. Both sustained minor injuries, according to fire officials. Early reports had provided limited information about the school vehicle, but later details confirmed that it was among the eight vehicles involved in the collision.
The crash also resulted in leaking vehicle fluids, including possible diesel fuel from the tractor-trailer. Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the scene, while an environmental cleanup contractor was brought in to deal with the spill.
The highway remained closed for more than five hours as emergency crews treated injured people, investigators examined the collision and damaged vehicles were removed. By around 2 p.m., the Connecticut Department of Transportation reported that only the right westbound lane remained closed.
The crash occurred near a construction area associated with the Bissell Bridge, where traffic is forced into a lane closure. Fire officials said congestion and limited visibility in the area can cause motorists approaching Exit 2 to encounter stopped or slow-moving traffic with little warning.
A separate minor collision was also reported on the opposite side of I-291 after a motorist slowed down to look at the major crash and was subsequently rear-ended. Authorities urged drivers not to slow unnecessarily to observe emergency scenes and to remain focused on traffic conditions. The Connecticut State Police accident reconstruction unit is investigating the circumstances that led to the eight-vehicle collision. Officials have not indicated that the crash was fatal, and the precise cause remains under investigation.
For motorists traveling through South Windsor, the accident created significant delays during one of the busiest periods of the day. Drivers were advised to avoid the affected stretch of I-291 and use alternate routes while emergency and cleanup operations continued.
