The search for 5-year-old Saylor Hayes ended in tragedy Monday, August 31, 2026, after authorities recovered the body of the missing girl from waters near the area where she was last seen in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
Saylor was reported missing Sunday after she wandered away from a rental home her family was staying at along Old Waccamaw Drive in the Hagley Estates community. The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office quickly launched a major search operation, bringing together law enforcement officers, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams, divers and members of the local community.
Authorities said Saylor was nonverbal and did not respond to her name, prompting investigators to ask anyone who encountered her to speak slowly and gently. She was last seen wearing a light-blue one-piece bathing suit and a pink-and-white lanyard around her ankle.
The search continued through Sunday night and into Monday morning. Deputies conducted ground searches and boat patrols while specialized teams searched the surrounding waterways. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division provided a helicopter and underwater drone, while the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources deployed divers. The U.S. Coast Guard also assisted with marine resources.
Hundreds of residents joined the effort, searching nearby properties and guarding docks as authorities worked to determine where the child might have gone. Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver said Sunday that search crews would continue until Saylor was found.
At approximately 9:45 a.m. Monday, agents with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources located Saylor’s body in the water near where she had last been seen, bringing the extensive search to a heartbreaking conclusion.
Saylor and her family were visiting from Virginia, according to authorities. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation, and officials have not publicly announced a cause or manner of death beyond the recovery of her body from the water.
The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to Saylor’s family while thanking the numerous agencies, volunteers and residents who participated in the search. The response involved multiple law-enforcement and emergency organizations, including the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, SCDNR, SLED, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Horry County Fire Department and several local fire and emergency-service agencies.
The tragedy has deeply affected the Pawleys Island community, where residents came together in an urgent effort to bring the young girl home safely. What began as a desperate search involving hundreds of people ended with the community facing the devastating loss of a child.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information as the investigation continues. For now, Saylor Hayes is being remembered as a young girl whose disappearance brought an entire community together in the hope of finding her.
